Why bigger shoes sometimes cost a little more…

If you've ever looked at a pair of trainers and thought:

“Hang on… why does the Size 14 cost more than the Size 9?!” 🤔

You’re not imagining it.

And no, there isn't a secret BIG FEET TAX! 😂 Or is there...!?

The reality is that bigger shoes genuinely cost us more to buy.

At BigShoes.ie, we specialise in the sizes most shoe shops seem to forget exist — and there are a few reasons why those glorious Size 13s, 14s, 15s, 16s and 17s can cost a little more.

So… here we go! 👇

🏭 1. FEWER BIG SHOES ARE ACTUALLY MADE

Think about it.

A manufacturer might make thousands and thousands of pairs in the most common sizes.

Size 8? Loads of them.

Size 9? Loads.

Size 10? Mountains of them.

Size 15? 👀

Not quite so many!

The bigger the size, the smaller the production run tends to become.

And manufacturing LOVES volume.

If you're making enormous quantities of something, the cost of production gets spread across all those pairs.

But when you're producing specialist sizes in much smaller numbers?

💥 The cost per pair goes up.

📦 2. THEN THERE'S THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF MOQs!

MOQ = Minimum Order Quantity.

Not particularly exciting…

…but VERY important when it comes to big shoes.

Factories and footwear brands can't simply fire up a production line because someone somewhere wants three pairs of Size 16s.

There are:

🧱 Moulds
✂️ Materials
📦 Packaging
🚚 Logistics
📊 Minimum quantities

…and all of those costs have to be spread across a much smaller number of shoes.

BIG SHOES = NICHE PRODUCTION.

And niche production costs more.

💶 3. HERE'S THE REALLY IMPORTANT BIT…

THEY ACTUALLY COST US MORE!

This is something most customers will understandably never see.

When BigShoes.ie buys footwear from wholesalers and distributors, larger sizes can actually have a higher wholesale price.

How much higher?

We regularly see shoes above Size 12 costing us around €5 MORE PER PAIR. 😲

Same brand.

Same shoe.

Same colour.

Same box.

BIGGER SIZE = HIGHER COST TO US.

So when you see a slight price difference on a larger shoe, it isn't BigShoes.ie sitting in a dark room saying:

“Excellent… another Size 15 customer! Add a fiver!” 😂

We’ve often already paid the extra ourselves.

👟 4. AND YES… THERE'S ACTUALLY MORE SHOE!

This one sounds obvious, but it's worth remembering.

A Size 16 shoe is physically a LOT bigger than a Size 8.

More upper material.

More sole.

More cushioning.

Bigger insoles.

Bigger lasts and moulds.

Even…

None of those things individually explains the entire price difference.

But combine them with smaller production runs and lower volumes and suddenly those extra costs start adding up.

🌍 5. NOW LET'S TRY GETTING THEM TO IRELAND…

Ah yes.

There is just one tiny logistical complication…

And unfortunately, the world's major shoe factories aren't located in Dublin 2.

Shoes can travel a VERY long way before they eventually land on the shelves at BigShoes.ie.

Factory ➡️ International freight ➡️ European/UK distributor ➡️ Freight again ➡️ Ireland ➡️ BigShoes.ie ➡️ YOUR MASSIVE FEET. 👣😂

Every stage adds cost.

And when you're dealing in specialist footwear rather than millions of pairs of mainstream sizes, you simply don't have the gigantic economies of scale enjoyed by some of the world's biggest footwear retailers.
